Note on the music: I played the saxophone for a number of years and studied jazz theory at the college level so that's my background. I have spent far less time developing my guitar "skills" but I believe it is an essential song-writing tool along with keyboards. Learning how to play the "changes" in all 12 keys and knowing the difference between ionian and mixolydian scales is great to know, but as Charlie Parker once said, "Learn the changes and then forget them."
