"Sierra Wave" clouds otherwise known as lenticular clouds often form in the late afternoon over the Owens Valley. Their shapes are caused by the high altitude Sierra Nevada mountains which push the clouds high up into the atmosphere. Some lenticulars resemble flying UFO's.
