Minus Tide at James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Moss Beach, CaliforniaPhoto ID# RW142 Click here to license photo for publication The James G. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, California was established to preserve the marine habitat in this scenic stretch of the San Francisco Bay Area's San Mateo Coast. Harbor seals, birds, and marine life are abundant. As always, please try not to damage the wildlife by stepping on mussels, anemones and sea stars. And do not pick anything up, as sea stars have suction cups which help them to move, eat and hold onto surfaces, which end up breaking off when people pick them up. It takes months for them to regenerate but by then they may be swept off to sea and die. Curiously, sea stars aren't as abundant at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve as they used to be due to human curiosity. |
