Train Passing over the Falls of the Ohio and Downtown Louisville, Falls of the Ohio State Park, IndianaPhoto ID# RW1464 License stock photo for publication The Falls of the Ohio is located on the bi-state borders of Indiana and Kentucky, in the towns of Clarksville and Louisville respectively. The powerful falls, actually a series of strong rapids on the Ohio River was tamed because in the 18th and 19th centuries, boats would have to portage their supplies on the banks of Louisville in order to circumnavigate the falls safely. By doing so, one of the world's largest exposed, 386 million year-old Devonian era fossil beds was partially exposed by the Ohio River. The remaining exposed portion of fossils was preserved by the creation of the Falls of the Ohio State Park in 1990. |
