Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) are a type of yucca, in which the name "Joshua" was given to them by a traveling group of Mormons who crossed the Mojave Desert in the 1800's. The shape of the tree reminded them of the biblical story of Joshua as he reaches his hand up to the sky.
