Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, WyomingPhoto ID# RW2434 Click here to license stock photo for publication Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming is the most famous geyser in the world and the original scenic icon of the U.S. National Park system. Old Faithful is named as such because it is the most reliable geyser in Yellowstone, as it erupts from between every 65 to 93 minutes with the average being 91 minutes. Most geysers erupt irregularly and some haven't erupted in many years. Geysers are a type of geothermal hot spring that erupts a column of steam and hot water into the air heated by magma beneath the surface of Earth. There are only about 1,000 geysers on the planet, of which half are located in Yellowstone NP. The Old Faithful geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin area of Yellowstone. |
