The 19th of the 21 California Missions, Mission Santa Ines was founded in 1804 by Father Estevan Tapis. The mission was named after Saint Agnes, a virgin martyr and saint of the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Catholic Churches. The nearby town of Santa Ynez is an anglicized spelling of Santa Ines.
