The ocean floor drops steeply just off shore of Monterey. The Monterey Bay features one of the world's deepest ocean canyons and is sometimes referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific Ocean." Marine wildlife is abundant in these giant kelp-filled, cold, nutrient-rich waters and is home to sea otters, gray whales and blue whales among other animals.
