Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was regarded as the most important of the 21 California Missions. Founded as the 2nd California Mission in 1770, Father Junipero Serra established his personal headquarters here. Today, he is buried beneath the 1797 Carmel Mission altar.
