Ice Plant is a non-native, invasive species to California originally cultivated from South Africa by Caltrans in order to stabilize soil for public infrastructure projects. The climate of the California Coast is similar to that of where the Ice Plant originally came from so growth of the species has become as pervasive as gloomy summer weather along the coast. By lowering biodiversity, Ice Plant poses a serious ecological threat to California despite being beautiful in its own right.
