In the early half of the 1900's, Cannery Row consisted of numerous sardine canning factories until the local fishing industry collapsed due to overfishing. Popularized by the John Steinbeck novel of the same name, Cannery Row has evolved into an international tourism destination anchored by the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium which opened in 1984.
