In the late 1800's, the San Francisco Bay Area had a sizable Chinese shrimp fishing industry until anti-Chinese racism and discriminatory laws contributed to the downfall of the industry. At one point, China Camp was home to over 500 Chinese immigrants from Canton, China along with several general stores, a marine supply store and a barber shop.

Today, China Camp is the last remaining Chinese shrimp fishing village in the Bay Area and is used primarily as a recreational park. Frank Quan, the grandson of the original owner of the general store still resides in the village today as he has for his entire life.
