Kayaks and Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CaliforniaPhoto ID# RW850 License stock photo for publication The iconic landmark feature of the Central California Coast, Morro Rock is a 576 foot tall extinct volcanic plug that is part of the Nine Sisters of San Luis Obispo County ancient volcanic chain located between the coastal towns of San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Morro Rock named "El Morro", Little Pebble in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Morro Rock is also referred to as "The Gibralter of the Pacific." Climbing on the rock is prohibited and can result in jail time due to loose falling rocks and because it is a protected bird nesting sanctuary site.
