Bill Reid's Raven and the First Men Haida Sculpture at UBC's Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver, Canada
Bill Reid is considered to be the modern pioneer of Haida art. His influence can be seen all over the local art scene and attractions around town. I think this sculpture, Raven and the First Men, was probably his most popular piece as it evidenced by how prominently displayed it is in the rotunda. I think it is too bad that when I took art history class they only talked about Roman Empire art, the old European artists and the abstract stuff from the early 1900’s but never went over anything non-European such as indigenous art from various cultures. I personally am much more interested in the Native American, or First Nations art than I am looking at paintings because you can physically interact with these pieces unlike a two-dimensional object like canvas.

Nice capture. The piece is amazing in photo. I can’t even imagine how it is walking all around it. I have to say that some of the most memorable pieces to me in a museum are carvings and scupltures also.

Thanks Leann. I wasn’t able to walk all the way around it because the area in front of it was closed for construction I think. It would have been nice though.
