Columnar Basalt, Devils Postpile National Monument, California

Columnar Basalt, Devils Postpile National Monument, California

Devils Postpile is one of the more surreal California landscapes that I’ve encountered. We stopped by the columnar basalt on the way to Rainbow Falls just after the crack of dawn. Unfortunately it was not long after this point that I realized I had left something out in our campsite in the Lake Mary area so we had to skip out on our plans to visit Rainbow Falls and return to camp. The road to Devils Postpile is closed to private cars between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and only accessible via shuttle so we opted to head to Mono Lake instead of returning via shuttle since I’m not into following lemmings, er, um, crowds. I was kind of pissed at myself for not being able to complete this hike as I had never been to Rainbow Falls before but there’s always next time…
