Leonard Knight at Salvation Mountain, Slab City, California Leonard Knight at Salvation Mountain, Slab City, California

Leonard Knight is the creator of Salvation Mountain. He told me that he has been residing there for the past 24 years working on this monumental project. Personally I think he should be mentioned up there along with the other great artists of the 20th century. Salvation Mountain is really impressive both from a distance and up close.

Mr. Knight also appears in the movie Into the Wild. Highly recommended book and movie if you haven’t already checked them out.

Thanks for sharing a photo of Salvation Mountain’s creator. Wonder how he ever had an idea to create something like that and if he did it on his own (spouse?). -t

Came across this photo while looking through your Salton Sea images. Do you have more details about Slab City? Like where is it? Why is it called that?

    Curious minds want to know…

Hey Greg. Just missed your call. I’m sure you have an early morning wake up…

Anyway, Slab City is basically a place where squatters have set up shop just outside of Niland which is on the southeast corner of the Salton Sea. It is on the site of an abandoned navy base I think.
