Life Through Rose-Colored Glasses

Apricot Nectar Rose / The Huntington Botanical Gardens
Apricot Nectar Rose / The Huntington Botanical Gardens

It can be a long drive just to go shoot pictures or to sit outside and read a book when you’re alone. But there is a certain freedom that comes with it as well. Sometimes we all need to get away from thinking too much and do something good for ourselves. I think I’ve found it.

I signed up for the Contributor Level annual membership at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. The primary benefit in my opinion, being that you can get in at 8 a.m. on weekends (regular admission opens at 10:30 am) and you have access to all the summer evening events. As a photographer it benefits me several ways. The first is that these are the best hours for light and secondly, there are a lot less people wandering around the gardens during these hours. The best part is that the gardens are a completely different experience in the morning hours when you have the whole place to yourself. It’s great!

The Rose Garden is normally pretty crowded, as it was on Friday afternoon, but I went again yesterday morning at 8 a.m. and it was the first time I can remember not having to wait for people to move out of my compositions. Admittedly, I am usually not an early riser but I can definitely get used to waking up for this.

Great image, Richard. Love it and worth the early rise. This should sell as a card image just fine.

Thanks Gary. The overcast conditions definitely did wonders for the lighting.

Very nice Richard. That sounds like a great deal with being able to get in early.
