Seeing Light in Gardens

Photographing seasons is one way to see an outdoor scene in different ways, but there is also another: light. I posted a similar “Seeing Gardens photo” from this same spot last week but in overcast light which is marked by an absence of strong shadows. On Saturday morning as I was walking around the Huntington with a Holga plastic camera, I noticed this same scene in near complete shadow due to the sun rising over the clear skies from the east so I had to take a photo. I went back Sunday morning with my big camera and took the above image. To me, the original version is an architectural photo in a garden whereas this heavily shadowed version is a garden image. All because of how the light interacts with the landscape.

Beautiful, Richard! I remember the cool “door” shot you recently posted of the Huntington Botanical Garden. It never fails to fascinate me how many unique shots are possible of the same place by simply stepping to the side a few feet, or waiting for different light. Are we going to see a nighttime shot soon?

Beautiful and rustic doorway, the flowers add a lot here Richard.

Thanks guys.
Julie – I suspect that if I did a summer evening shot it might look similar to the first one with more of a blueish hue to it. Though sunset might be different with the warm light. I’ll see.
