Macro World

Posted on | March 5, 2006 | No Comments

I’ve been thinking of getting a macro lens for a while so I could be more creative with my flower pictures so I was at Powell Camera yesterday in Covina trying out the Tamron 90mm, Canon 60mm, and 100mm macro lenses. I’d tried to Sigma 100, and 150 at Samy’s in Pasadena last month but wasn’t too impressed for some reason. But the Canon 60mm blew me away. The longer lenses seemed more difficult to control DOF and hard to handhold steadily. I don’t shoot insects anyway so I don’t mind having to get close, plus getting closer to the subject feels more intimate than shooting with a 150 or 300mm not to mention the need for mirror lockup at those lengths.

I want the Canon 60mm macro lens, but it’s a bit out of price range right now at $400. But here’s a look at how amazing macro is.

The detail is just mind-blowing. This lens is by far the sharpest lens I’ve ever tried. With a tripod and increased DOF, this could really be something special.
