Downtown Decorah, Iowa

Downtown Decorah, Iowa

The empty streets of downtown Decorah reminded me of an old movie set. When I’ve traveled outside of the west, the difference is noticeable particularly on the weekends. Almost everyone literally has the weekend off whereas in the west it seems like a non-stop commercial machine. Even when I was in a big city like Fort Worth, Texas, the shopping mall downtown was closed on Sunday.

In many ways I think that’s great. That’s the best time to go out shooting photos of these places. The people of the midwest probably have more time to spend valuing the important things in life like family and friends. At least when I lived in Kentucky, that was the most noticeable difference to me. People were friendly, took their time while talking and legitimately wanted to talk to you.

Great photo! I grew up in Decorah and my father owns the building in the photo on the left. I agree and with your view of it being a good thing to have stores closed on Sunday as it gives people the opportunity to be with friends and family. Although, I am currently living in Germany and the government dictates that most stores can not be open on a Sunday, not even grocery stores which is a huge pain. I believe all business owners should be able to make that decision themselves.

Thanks Royce. It’s always great to hear from those who have a personal connection the places in my photos.

I do agree that business owners should be able to make their own decisions though I would personally like to see America’s reputation for working more days than any other country change.
