Why Pasadena is a Great Place to Live

Pasadena City Hall Illuminated with Red and Orange Lights During Art Night, Pasadena, California
Since moving here earlier this year, I’ve gained an even greater appreciation for Pasadena. I spent a lot of my childhood at my grandparents house in Pasadena but hadn’t really explored the city much as an adult until this year. Now that it is convenient to do so, I’ve been trying to go to as many events, museums and restaurants as I possibly can. Never thought I would admit this but Pasadena is probably my favorite city that I’ve lived in. I still want to move back to the Bay Area eventually for the hiking trails and for the benefit of my photography but Pasadena is cleaner, has a lot of things to do and is a less stressful place to live than San Francisco.
Art Night is held on several Friday nights per year and is one of the many great things to do in Pasadena. There are lots of bands and music acts playing around town outdoors. All the museums are open for free. The Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) for one is a really interesting place to see modern art. A couple months ago there was a graffiti art exhibit for example. This past Friday there was a great exhibit of miniature scene sculptures by Roland Reiss. Then if you want to see world-class art by the likes of Van Gogh and Monet then there’s the Norton Simon Museum which is just down the street. And for photographers like me, Pasadena City Hall turns on all the flood lights including some multi-colored strobes just for Art Night.

I’ve always liked Pasadena…and as you pointed out when I was there, it has some trails going up into the mountains. That Art Night and other street activities sound great. Also, I believe it is that City Hall that you made the fine night time photo of that has a number of Philip Hyde original prints hanging inside.

Thanks guys.
David – do you know where the prints are hanging? I have several relatives that work there so I could probably go see the prints if I knew where they were.

I just talked to Ray McSavaney, who used to teach at the Ansel Adams Gallery and was a friend of Dad’s. Mr. McSavaney said that Dad’s photos are not hanging in Pasadena City Hall. They are at the Ninth District Courthouse, which also happens to be in Pasadena. A 9th District judge that Ray McSavaney knew by the name of Cynthia Holcomb Hall, who was once considered for the Supreme Court and is now deceased, had a significant interest in photography. She purchased, for the 9th Circuit Courthouse, prints by Philip Hyde, Robert Glenn Ketchum, John Sexton, Jay Dusard, Bruce Barnbaum, Huntington Witherill, Morley Baer and Ray McSavaney.

BTW, the prints are in the halls and some conference rooms of the 9th Circuit Courthouse.
