Photographing Joshua Tree National Park

Sunset Along Barker Dam Trail, Joshua Tree National Park, California
I first visited Joshua Tree National Park as a college student and wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. The other national parks I’d been to at the time were the likes of Yosemite, Zion, Canadian Rockies, etc… where the attractions were very obvious and staples of the postcard photography circuit. Joshua Tree NP by comparison had just become a national park several years prior and had very little visitation at the time. There wasn’t even an admission booth back then. It was very much unfamiliar territory for me as I knew nothing about the park other than it occupied a large space on my AAA map and had went from national monument status to a national park under the Clinton administration.
It wasn’t until I became more experienced as a photographer that I began to appreciate Joshua Tree. The greatest thing about Joshua Tree is that there are no specific iconic images that the park is known for. Sure there are a lot of joshua trees in the park but nothing really stands out in the way that many other national parks do. For a landscape photographer seeking to pursue his own vision this is as good of a shooting opportunity as it gets. A pretty place yet an open book for creativity. It is pretty much impossible to copy another photographer’s image at Joshua Tree National Park (except for maybe Keys View) because there are so many visual elements in the landscape that it’s kind of overwhelming.
