Photographing Protests

Angry Protesters Screaming For Justice at the 2008 May Day Illegal Immigration March, Downtown Los Angeles, California
Photographing protests is not for the timid. These are often high-tense situations so you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times because lets face it, it is safer to photograph trees and rocks than an angry mob. For a photojournalist however, you are often a welcome sight because these people want their cause to attract media attention. With that in mind, take advantage of those opportunities to get up close to the heart of the action. You do have to pay attention to the protesters body language just like you would in any other situation but more often than not, they are so absorbed in their own thing that they do not even notice you so it is fairly easy to get candid action photos.

Besides landscapes, this is another kind of photography that interests me. Great image above. I particularly like that you captured it in such a way that the message of the protesters is not the main focus of the image.

Thanks David. I agree, as I liked the emotion of the scene.

Seems to me like a great situation for a very long lens, and perhaps some camo in some bushes.

You have a point there, Mark. Though I photographed this the same way I did the grizzly bears. Right in front of their face.
