The Smoggies

San Gabriel Mountains at Sunset, Angeles National Forest, California
The eastern seaboard has the Smokies, meanwhile I get to photograph the Smoggies, aka. San Gabriel Mountains. I grew up here right at the foothills and have always had a love-hate (mostly the latter) relationship with the place I call home. One thing I can’t complain about though is that we have no shortage of amazing sunsets in Southern California.

The Non-Glamorous Side of Photography

And it’s hard to beat the Smokies for shots of this type. But your Smoggies certainly compete. Sunsets in general just seem fantastic in the western areas of the country. On the trip out last fall they had a tendency to dominate the daily shooting even though they weren’t on the agenda. I couldn’t escape them. They’re taking over my portfolio like kudzu. (That’s a southeastern thing.) But visually I never seem to get enough of them, so thank you for this one! Found my way here via Colleen Miniuk-Sperry’s blog.

Thanks Richard. I’m sure our sunsets have something to do with the lack of moisure in the air in combination with the smog. I lived in Kentucky for a little bit and I never saw sunsets like we have here. The sunsets I saw there were more light magenta / pinkish, whereas we have reds and oranges.

I thought I had already written here that you make those Smoggies look as good as the Smokies.

Thanks David. I haven’t been to the Smokies myself but I’m sure they are nice.
