So Close Yet So Far, Border Field State Park

Last Saturday, La Jolla-based photographer Brian Auer and I went to photograph the U.S. border. Neither of us knew what to expect and turned out to be quite a surreal experience even while driving in.

I said hello to this guy as I was standing next to the border fence then he started asking me how far San Diego was from there and then about Imperial Beach which was across the Tijuana Estuary. After I pointed out that San Diego was about 20 miles north of here, I asked him if I could take pictures of him. He agreed then instantly his previously upbeat demeanor transformed to what you see here. I wished him good luck once I finished taking my photos.

WOW Richard, what an experience! I didn’t realize they had a State Park there. Is it new?

I was 9 years old the first and only time I went into Mexico by car. But, thanks to Euell Howser’s recent series about the 5 corners of California, I got a glimpse of people trying to get into California from Mexico. This photo looks a lot like what I remember seeing on television.

Thanks Sherri. I believe it has been a State Park for a long time now.

I think with some of those other locations along the border you’d really be putting your life on the line to visit those places.

Surreal. Once again great story and equally powerful photo. While not on the top of my list to visit your story makes the photojournalistic aspect of this area quite appealing.

Thanks Jim. Definitely not a place you’d want to visit by yourself but I’m glad that I got this one out of the way.
