Yosemite Fall Color

The fall color in Yosemite is beautiful this year. I’m no tree expert but the maple leaves were mostly yellow along the road just up from the park entrance up past El Capitan Meadow. From what I had read online, I didn’t have high hopes of photographing colorful foliage but the color became increasingly vibrant …

Yosemite Valley

My last visit to Yosemite Valley was during the winter of 2004 so I’d been wanting to come back for a while now and do some classic landscape photography. I don’t know about other photographers but I find it impossible to visit Yosemite and not want to photograph certain iconic scenes like Tunnel View at …

Joshua Tree National Park Stargazing

Since photographing the Milky Way in the Eastern Sierra two years ago I’ve thought of trying my luck at Joshua Tree National Park. Based on previous experience, I figured that the most effective way to do night photography would be to choose a moonless evening that way the photo actually looks like night photography. As …

Light Painting

Light painting is something I experimented with on my last visit to Joshua Tree National Park two years ago and involves the use of long exposures in darkness with the only illumination being flashlights. On this moonless evening, I tried many different lighting techniques and had some fun with it at the end. This particular …

Photographing Joshua Tree National Park

I first visited Joshua Tree National Park as a college student and wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. The other national parks I’d been to at the time were the likes of Yosemite, Zion, Canadian Rockies, etc… where the attractions were very obvious and staples of the postcard photography circuit. Joshua Tree NP …

Double Rainbow

The sunset clouds were great in every direction but the double rainbow commanded most of my attention. The rainbows were too close for me to capture the full 180 degrees with my 24mm lens so I had to do a five-image panoramic stitch in order to capture it all. I’ve seen double rainbows like …

Sunset Ridge

I had been up to this local location scouting several times recently without my camera and was waiting for an evening such as last night to photograph. As if the sunset wasn’t exciting enough, it started raining while I was up there and I barely made it off the mountain before lightning strikes lit up …

What to do when you forget camera gear in the car?

You lend yourself a hand. I noticed this spot during the last sunset I photographed at the Huntington Botanical Gardens so I made a mental note to photograph this scene at a future summer evening event. I obviously made it there to shoot this photo last night but what isn’t obvious is that I had …

Sierra Heritage Magazine Cover

My photo, Owens River Sunrise, is featured on the cover of Sierra Heritage Magazine. The magazine is currently on the newsstands if you wish to check it out. It’s a great magazine that’s been around for many years. Speaking of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I am planning on a trip to Yosemite Valley this fall. …

Palm Garden

Something about the exotic plants and the tangled mess of plant detail at the Palm Garden attracted me to this scene while on a morning stroll of The Huntington Botanical Gardens. This scene reminded me of the classic Nature’s Chaos book by James Gleick and Eliot Porter. See more of my Huntington Gardens pictures.
