My past, present and future all met in Pacifica several days ago. This area of Pacifica was one of the local areas I used to frequent a decade-plus ago when I was a young photographer in grad school with little money in the bank account. At the time I looked at my photography of local places as “practice” for bigger and better things when I could afford to do so. Interesting as time goes on I find myself going back to these “practice” places from my past to see them through my eyes in the present. I choose to go now because I want to. I also want to show my wife and my son what led me to them; why I am the way I am now.
You can search your whole life for bigger and better things but maybe you’ve already got the best life for you. I’m someone that has always been chronically malcontent with status quo but now that I have a family, life is different. I have other priorities in life. Photography is still one of them but not #1. What isn’t apparent in this pretty landscape is that my wife was in the car feeding my son after an evening hike when I noticed the sunset starting to heat up. After asking if I could shoot the sunset, I found a spot about ten feet from my car where I hastily set up my equipment and shot photos until the color disappeared. Most of my day was spent on family time but just for a few minutes I had to relive my past life. Despite not being 100% focused on photography, I’m happy with the end result.
