As mentioned in the blog post about Stanley Park Totem Poles, there is a big homeless problem in Vancouver. The difference at least from what I have seen is that digging in trash cans and drug trade happens much more in the open here than in the big cities I have been to in the U.S. Right before I shot this photo, I saw this ordinary-looking Asian woman walking toward me from the corner of my eye and proceeded to dive head-first into the trash right in the middle of the crowded public street market. Having lived in downtown San Francisco, I have seen a lot of homeless but to see someone like this digging in the trash was quite a surprise to me.
A bit later, I saw a man and a woman walk right past me from the street into an alley to stand next to a garbage dumpster making a drug transaction. When a biker started to come down the alley from the other street, the pair quickly dispersed.
