Wave Break

On Shore Wave Break, Laguna Beach, California On Shore Wave Break, Laguna Beach, California

There were 7 – 9 foot swells and at this place the waves break on shore so it was exciting to say the least. There was a big minus tide at 2:30 but by the time I took this photo it was nearing hide tide which was at 4+ feet above sea level which meant that the waves were getting bigger and bigger as I was witnessing this scene. I am not even going to say what happened to me and my gear after this point.

    Richard:

Looks like the type of waves that could sweep people away. Glad you’re still here. :)

Thanks Gary. The waves break into this “cauldron” type of thing before exploding upward and where I was was situated above where the wave breaks so the water wasn’t so much a sweeping motion as it was raining down from above.

It looks like you were right in the middle of this splash. I m sure you and your equipment would be drenched to the bone

Hey Thomas. I can attest that the water tasted pretty salty!

Thanks Bernie. I have been under contract with Canon to see how water resistant their cameras are. :-o

I live in Laguna Beach and was down getting my own version of the Castle Turret and I almost lost my camera to a rogue wave hitting the man-made break. I was lucky and got the shot and managed to save the camera. That’s the third time I have come very close to losing the camera down at the beach.

    Keep up the posts.

Wow. I was wondering about that levee thing because the waves were getting quite close to it when I was there. Luckily the water didn’t come over because I wouldn’t have been prepared for it either. It is a great beach though.

I have my picture of the turret here: http://www.lagunabeat.com/2009/02/i-didnt-see-it-i-heard-it.html

I’ve lived in Laguna Beach for over 30 years and it wasn’t until January that I finially got down to see the Turrent. I went bact on Feb 13 because of the clouds in the background.

I can see how the water flew over the levee. That tide looks a lot higher in your photo than it was when I was there.

The high tide for that day was 4.5 ft. That’s not that high for Laguna. That was a rogue wave. I had been watching the waves to see were they were falling inside the the protected area. I just didn’t count on a wave that big. I was really lucky that day. Getting the picture and saving the camera.

Question: Your photo of the Morro Bay rock is it the same picture that was in the LA Times Travel section a few weeks back?

Good idea on keeping out for the wave. For the wave in my picture here it was one of those where your eyes get all big and you kind of hold your breath hoping for the best.

The photo of Morro Rock looked similar to what I had taken and coincidentally I think ran at the same time I took the photos. For a second when I opened the paper I was like, wait is that my photo?
