Yosemite Valley Sunset from Tunnel View

Yosemite Valley Sunset from Tunnel View

My last visit to Yosemite Valley was during the winter of 2004 so I’d been wanting to come back for a while now and do some classic landscape photography. I don’t know about other photographers but I find it impossible to visit Yosemite and not want to photograph certain iconic scenes like Tunnel View at least once during a trip. This trip was really good timing too because all the kids just went back to school so there were relatively few people by Yosemite standards during the weekday. The fall color was inching closer to peak and Yosemite Falls even had a decent flow to it when we first arrived. (It is usually dry by this time of year.)

Yosemite wasn’t in my plans though until just a few weeks ago when my mom asked if I wanted to go with her. I remember my first visit in 1991 was even less planned. My dad pulled us out of school spur of the moment and off we went to Yosemite in October. It might come as a surprise to you but I didn’t have a favorable impression of Yosemite Valley for much of my life. I remember that first trip as really hot, dry and full of bad air quality due to a fire. It was nowhere near as pleasant as the photos would lead you to believe. I didn’t return again until the winter of 2001 with a friend as a college graduation reward for ourselves. Yosemite definitely left a better impression on me after that visit. It wasn’t until this trip however that I felt a real connection to the place and finally scratched the surface of photographing it.

I have a lot of images to edit through so I’ll post them when I can.

This is beautiful, Richard — I really love the light on El Cap! While it may be one of the most photographed spots in the park, I never tire of seeing quality photos from Tunnel View!

Thanks Pat. Tunnel View is an amazing place for sure. As great as pictures can be, nothing captures the experience like actually being there.
