The bridge was built in 1844 by John W. Smith. It is notable for being the only 19th-century covered bridge in Vermont that uses wooden Howe trusses and still carries a public roadway. The Howe truss design was patented just four years earlier in 1840, making this bridge a relatively early example of this construction type.

Local Legend
The bridge has gained notoriety due to a local legend about a ghost named Emily. According to the story, which was featured on the Travel Channel's "Most Terrifying Places in America," Emily was a jilted bride who allegedly committed suicide at the bridge in the 1850s. This legend has led to the bridge's nickname, "Emily's Bridge," and reports of paranormal activity.
