FAQs for Students
I frequently get requests from students of all ages around the world to answer questions for their school projects. I can't respond to each person individually so I'm going to start compiling questions here which will hopefully help.
When did you start taking pictures?
I first picked up a camera somewhere around 1999-2000. I started taking it seriously in 2002 when I began using 35mm slide film (Fuji Velvia & Provia).
What style of photography do you specialize in?
My main interests are landscape, nature and travel photography. I do not shoot weddings or commercial portraiture.
Who are three photographers who inspired you?
- Galen Rowell (1940-2002): Rowell was a highly influential mountaineer/climber/photographer who pioneered 35mm landscape photography. I learned how to see light from Galen's teachings. He tragically passed away in a plane crash in 2002.
- David Muench (1936-Present): Muench was famous for his near-far composition technique. You might notice that some of my images have a prominent foreground element. That came from David Muench.
- Sam Abell (1945-Present): A long-time National Geographic staff photographer, Sam Abell is a documentary photographer with a strong eye for composition. I've long been inspired by Abell's work even though it's stylistically different from my own work.
I think your photos are amazing. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?
My advice would be to follow your passion and not do photography purely for commercial reasons. I’ve met a lot of photographers over the years that have quit after just a few years because they saw it more as a career opportunity or a fun activity than as an art form.
