What is The Huntington Library?

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is a world-renowned cultural institution located in San Marino, California. Founded in 1919 by railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington, the institution houses an extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, and artwork, as well as a stunning botanical garden.

The library is home to over nine million items, including rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and maps, which span a broad range of subjects from medieval illuminated manuscripts to modern American literature. Some of the library's most notable collections include the Ellesmere Manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a Gutenberg Bible, and a collection of 18th-century British portraits.

The Huntington Art Museum and the Virginia Steele Scott Gallery of American Art features a diverse collection of European and American art from the 15th century to the present day. The museum collections include works by such renowned artists as Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, Mary Cassatt, Albert Bierstadt and Edward Hopper. The museums also house an extensive collection of decorative arts, including furniture, ceramics, and silver.

The botanical gardens at the Huntington cover over 120 acres and feature over 16 themed gardens, including the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, and the Desert Garden. The gardens are home to over 15,000 plant species, including rare and endangered species.

In addition to its collections and gardens, the Huntington also offers a wide range of educational programs and activities, including lectures, workshops, and exhibitions. The institution is committed to promoting education, research, and public access to its collections and resources.

What is the Best Time to Visit Huntington Library?

I have photographed the Huntington Gardens extensively during all four seasons, however my favorite time of year to visit is during spring and fall. Not only is the weather more pleasant but these two seasons are bursting full of color. During the spring months the rose garden is a must-visit as is the Shakespeare Garden which often flies under the radar. The Japanese and Chinese gardens have gorgeous fall foliage such as Ginkgo biloba during the late autumn season.
