Japanese gardens are a unique and serene form of landscape design that originated in Japan. They are characterized by the use of natural elements such as rocks, water, and plants to create a harmonious and balanced environment. These gardens are designed to reflect nature, and often feature winding paths, bridges, and strategically placed elements. The gardens also often have different sections with different themes such as a traditional Japanese strolling garden, a sand and stone garden, and a natural garden. Japanese gardens are designed to be appreciated in all seasons and often feature different plants and elements that come into bloom or change color according to the season. The gardens are also known for their simplicity and minimalism, which creates a feeling of tranquility and peace.
Two examples of famous Japanese gardens that I have photographed in the U.S. are The Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California and Portland Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. The Huntington Gardens features traditional Japanese elements such as a koi pond, a teahouse and a moon viewing deck. Portland Japanese Garden is an authentic Japanese garden, the garden is divided into several smaller gardens, each with a different theme such as the traditional Japanese strolling garden, the sand and stone garden, and the natural garden.
