Carmel Mission Church, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

The Carmel Mission, officially known as Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río Carmelo, is of immense importance in California history. Founded in 1770, it was the second mission established by the Franciscan order under the leadership of Father Junipero Serra. The mission played a crucial role in the expansion of Roman Catholicism within California, serving as a center for both religious and societal development. With the goal of spreading Roman Catholicism, Serra embarked on a journey to establish missions throughout California. The Carmel Mission was his second endeavor, after founding the Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Upon arriving in Carmel, Serra chose a site near the pristine Carmel River, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Here, he envisioned a mission that would not only serve as a religious center but also assist in the conversion and education of the local indigenous population.

The Carmel Mission showcases stunning Spanish colonial architecture, which played a crucial role in its construction. Serra and his fellow Franciscan friars enlisted the help of Native American artisans and craftsmen to bring their architectural vision to life. The mission's design heavily reflects the Spanish colonial style, characterized by thick adobe walls, red-tiled roofs, and graceful arches. These architectural elements not only provided structural integrity but also created a sense of tranquility and reverence within the mission's walls.

Saint Junipero Serra chose the Carmel Mission as his base of operations and lived there until his death in 1784. Carmel Mission was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988, Serra was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. In recent times however, Serra's reputation has come under fire for his colonization of Native Americans. Ultimately, most history from that era can be assessed in a different light in modern times but there is no doubt that Carmel Mission is a place of historical significance and a beautiful location to visit.

Museum-Quality: TruLife® Acrylic Face Mount Print - Ready To Hang

The most luxurious of fine art prints, TruLife® Acrylic face mount prints have a 3d-like appearance due to the print being sandwiched between museum-quality acrylic and a solid backer medium. The paper is specifically made for face mounted prints and features a pearl-like luminescence. When light hits the acrylic, it refracts through the artwork and gives off an appearance of having been illuminated from within. These are the most vibrant and detailed prints I offer. Acrylic prints are best suited for hanging in homes.
