Fogbow
Bodega Bay, California
Fogbow at Bodega Head, Sonoma Coast, California
Also known as white rainbows, fogbows share similarities with their more vibrant counterpart, the classic rainbow. However, their appearance is distinct and stunning in its own right. So, what exactly are fogbows?
Fogbows are created when light refracts off water droplets present in fog or mist. Unlike typical rainbows that arise from rain, fogbows are generated from much smaller droplets. As a result, their colors appear softer and more diffused, often displaying a delicate blend of pale pastels. Usually appearing as a ghostly white arch, fogbows lack the vivid hues commonly associated with rainbows. Instead, they exhibit a muted palette, with faint shades of blue and yellow occasionally visible towards the edges. The inner region of the fogbow can appear colorless or slightly tinged with red.
Observing a fogbow can be a truly enchanting experience. Due to its formation in fog or mist, the backdrop against which these ethereal halos materialize can create an otherworldly atmosphere, evoking a sense of mystery and tranquility. To catch a glimpse of a fogbow is to witness a moment of ephemeral beauty, a testament to the wonder of the natural world.
What amazed me about this fogbow was not the mere sight of it but the fact that numerous other hikers walked past on the trail without even noticing it. They are a relatively rare phenomenon so most people may not even be aware of their existence.
