Moulton Barn
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Moulton Barn at Sunrise, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
The Moulton family played an essential role in the establishment and development of the Jackson Hole Valley. In the late 1890s, John and his wife, Estella, arrived in the area and claimed a plot of land to begin their homesteading journey. The Moulton family faced numerous challenges as they settled in this rugged and untamed wilderness. They had to battle the harsh climate, limited resources, and isolation from the outside world. Despite these hardships, the Moultons persevered, working tirelessly to expand their homestead and make a living off the land.
John Moulton's son, Thomas Alma Moulton, later inherited the family homestead and continued the legacy of homesteading. Thomas married Lucille Dunford and together, they raised their children while nurturing the land that had become their home. Their daily lives revolved around farming, ranching, and the constant upkeep of their property.
Life as an early settler was far from easy. The lack of modern infrastructure meant that everything had to be done manually, from harvesting crops to building shelters. The settlers also had to contend with the unpredictable weather conditions, which could be especially harsh during the long winter months. The Moulton Barn became an integral part of the early settlers' lives. It served as a shelter for their livestock and a storage space for essential supplies. Its solid structure and strategic location provided protection from the elements and a sense of security for the settlers. Moreover, the barn served as a gathering place for the community, where stories were shared, friendships were forged, and knowledge was exchanged. It was a hub of activity, representing the collective spirit of the early settlers in their quest for a better life.
Today, the Moulton Barn stands as a symbol of the strength and resilience of the early settlers who paved the way for future generations. It serves as a reminder of the challenges they faced and the legacy they left behind, shaping the history and culture of the region. The property with the barn was one of the last parcels sold to the National Park Service by the Moulton family.
