The Santa Rosa Plateau, situated in Riverside County, southern California, is an elevated plateau that extends southeast from the Santa Ana Mountains. Within the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, approximately 8,400 acres (34 km2) of the plateau are preserved. The reserve not only protects the natural landscape but also includes historic structures such as the Moreno and Machado Adobes, which are the oldest standing buildings in Riverside County, dating back to the 19th century Mexican land grant Rancho Santa Rosa.
The Santa Rosa Plateau is characterized by diverse native plant communities and habitats. These include the vibrant purple needlegrass prairie (Nassella pulchra), the majestic California oak woodland (featuring Engelmann Oaks—Quercus engelmannii), montane chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and the increasingly rare vernal pools found in urbanized Southern California.
Engelmann oaks were once widespread across the western United States, but their range has receded to the southernmost regions, with Pasadena being their northernmost location. The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve plays a crucial role in protecting and sustaining the only protected and reproducing Engelmann oaks in the state.
Vernal pools, which are shallow depressions in the soil, fill with water during the spring rains. These pools serve as habitats for fairy shrimp and other minute crustaceans that hatch and lay their eggs during this time. The dormant eggs remain unaffected by the dry months until the subsequent rainy season, when they hatch and continue their life cycle.
