The Wormsloe Historic Site, originally named Wormsloe Plantation, is a state historic site located near Savannah, Georgia, in the southeastern United States. Covering 822 acres, the site preserves a portion of the historic Wormsloe Plantation, established by Noble Jones, one of Georgia's colonial founders. Key features of the site include a picturesque 1.5-mile oak-lined avenue, the ruins of Jones' fortified tabby house, a museum, and a demonstration area depicting colonial daily life.
In 1736, Noble Jones acquired a land grant for 500 acres on the Isle of Hope, which served as the nucleus of Wormsloe. He constructed a fortified house overlooking the Skidaway Narrows, strategically positioned along the Skidaway River within the Intracoastal Waterway. This fortified structure formed part of a defensive network established by James Oglethorpe and early Georgia settlers to safeguard Savannah against potential Spanish incursions. Over time, Jones expanded Wormsloe into a small plantation, and his descendants erected a grand mansion on the site, using it as a rural retreat.
The State of Georgia procured the majority of Wormsloe Plantation in 1973, subsequently opening it to the public as a state historic site in 1979.
