In The Field Photography Blogs

March 2, 2024

I started a photography blog in 2004, which was titled, "In The Field Photography Blog". Back then the term blogging was a new concept so I saw this as an opportunity to share and talk about my photography. I had more than 1,000 posts which covered everything from trip reports, photography philosophy to photography industry commentary. I ran the blog for 15 years until I created my current website which mostly caters to fine art photography clientele. I will use this section of this blog for trip reports (old and new) and share my thoughts on photography.

I recently had a chance to photograph and walk the Camino de Santiago in Portugal & Spain with Backroads. Walking and hiking is something I enjoy doing but I’ve never experienced anything quite like the Camino de Santiago...

Will AI Art Replace Photography?
January 16, 2023

I've written about AI before in an article titled, Is AI Bad For Landscape Photography?, and my conclusion was that it could be used for good practical application in terms of printmaking. Topaz Labs is a company that specializes in innovative photography software to overcome technical limitations...

Photographing Vancouver in Spring
April 25, 2017  |  Vancouver, British Columbia

The Vancouver area is a place that I’m fairly familiar with. My parents took me there when I was a kid to see Expo ’86, I revisited with my mom several years ago when we spent 12 days photographing the area, and I was most recently there two years ago...

May 1, 2017  |  The Butchart Gardens, Vancouver Island

Similar to what I wrote in my previous post, Photographing Vancouver in Spring, I had photographed The Butchart Gardens in the summer previously but was my first time visiting during the spring. On my previous visit, we arrived when it opened and spent all day there shooting photos until the late evening hours since they open until after dark during the summer months...

Is AI Bad For Landscape Photography?
December 17, 2020

One of the most polarizing topics in landscape photography these days is the use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) in post-processing software. On one side of this technology, Adobe Photoshop and especially Skylum's Luminar AI have been heavily promoting the ability to do automated sky replacements, adding in fog effects and sky effects such as god beams...

Saal Digital Review – Professional Line Photo Books
November 6, 2020

I’ve long desired to make a coffee-table quality book of my own landscape and nature photography but hadn’t put any effort into doing so until recent months when I started seeing Saal Digital Corporation’s ads on Facebook...

Five Places to Take Pictures in All 50 U.S. States
October 2, 2010

The “Great American Road Trip” is a dream shared by many, myself included. So I got to thinking about what I would like to do if I were to visit every state in the U.S. There are obviously too many great things in this country for one person to photograph everything in-depth during one lifetime so I came up with the idea for this blog post – Five Places to Take Pictures in All 50 U...

Should Photographers Use Art Titles?

Whether you should create art titles or not depends on what type of photography you do and what the intent is with your artwork. Photojournalists and editorial photographers for example probably shouldn't nor would have a reason to create art titles for their work...

Plagiarism

Over the past two years I've noticed a handful of photographers starting to copy my blog and basically write the same articles. One of whom outright copy and pasted at least half a dozen articles of mine verbatim while substituting out the photos for his own...
