The U.S. National Parks system was officially established in 1916 and currently consists of 63 national parks. Prior to the creation of the National Parks system, Yellowstone was designated as the first National Park in 1872. Other types of parks within the NPS include National Monuments and National Seashores however those generally have less federal protections and funding than national parks.

Some of the world's greatest and most famous landscapes can be found within the United States national parks including the the Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton, Yosemite National Park's Tunnel View, Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone, and Bryce Canyon's Inspiration Point. Protected wildlife include grizzly bears, Roosevelt elk, bald eagles and the iconic American bison. Not limited to just beautiful mountain scenery, natural landscapes and wildlife, the National Parks system also includes made-made landmarks such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.

I have photographed countless sunrise and sunset landscapes with my camera over the years but the feeling of photographing within a national park is unrivaled. Being within the natural environment puts my mind at ease and allows me to create art in a zen-like state. Photographing Second Beach in Olympic National Park before dawn in thick fog is really something special. Closer to home in California, I absolutely love crawling out of my campsite to spend hours hiking in places like Redwood National Park. The Grand Canyon is the most geologically impressive location on Earth. Utah's otherworldly desert sandstone leaves me breathless every time I see it.
