The Avenue of the Oaks at Boone Hall Plantation is a breathtaking spectacle that greets visitors as they arrive at this historic estate, located near Charleston, South Carolina. This iconic feature consists of a majestic double row of live oak trees (Quercus virginiana) that stretch for nearly three-quarters of a mile, creating a grand entrance that evokes a sense of timeless beauty and Southern charm.
The live oak trees, draped with Spanish moss and adorned with lush green foliage, form a natural canopy overhead, casting dappled shadows on the path below. As visitors stroll along the Avenue of the Oaks, they are enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by the serenity and splendor of the Lowcountry landscape.
The origins of the Avenue of the Oaks trace back to 1743 when the first trees were planted. The oak trees were planted along the main entrance to the plantation, serving as a symbol of hospitality and prestige for the estate's owners and guests.
