Standing at 14,179 feet, Mount Shasta looms high above the California Central Valley. On a clear day, the mountain can be seen from as far away as Mount Diablo which is located over 200 miles to the south in San Francisco's East Bay. Located in the southern Cascade Mountains range, Mount Shasta is considered to be a dormant volcano and part of the volcanic Pacific "Ring of Fire." The Ring of Fire constitutes a range of volcanic activity from Alaska to Hawaii. Mount Shasta is classified as a stratovolcano and is thought to have last erupted in the 1700's.
