Fine Art Landscape Photography Print Buyers Guide

What Is Fine Art Landscape Photography?

Fine art landscape photography elevates the traditional documentation of natural scenes into a form of artistic expression valued for its aesthetic merit, emotional impact, and technical mastery. Unlike casual landscape photography, fine art landscape photography demonstrates a photographer's unique vision, mastery of light and composition, and ability to evoke emotional responses through their interpretation of natural environments.

Landscape photography is a broad genre of art usually describing wide-angled nature and man-made scenes. While landscapes can sometimes include people in the scene, the art form is generally characterized by its absence of people. Fine art landscape photography prints are commonly found in hospitals, luxury homes and offices. What distinguishes fine art landscape photography is the photographer's artistic intent, technical excellence, and the creation of limited or carefully curated editions that maintain their collectible value over time.

Fog Rising Through Hoodoos at Sunrise, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

The Grand Staircase is a large geological feature spanning much of the Colorado Plateau area which spans across several southwestern states. Sedimentary rock layers of various ages ranging from hundreds of millions of years old to tens of millions of years old can be seen in this vast desert of the American southwest. Bryce Canyon is located at the top of the Grand Staircase which is called the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The Grand Canyon is located at the bottom of the Grand Staircase which has about 40 layers of sedimentary rock.

Just as I was framing up this photo a guy came by to admire this scene. He asked to look through my viewfinder so I obliged after taking a few frames. He remarked that this was "National Geographic level stuff".

Types of Landscape Photography

  • Iconic Landscapes: The most common type of landscape photography found in most photographers' portfolios. This genre is generally made on popular roadside pullouts though not always. These landscapes capture renowned locations like the Maroon Bells in Colorado or the Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton National Park that resonate with viewers through their natural grandeur. The style is characterized by its use of wide angle lenses and highly-saturated colors. For fine art collectors, iconic landscapes from specific, recognizable locations often carry additional value due to their emotional connection and familiarity.
  • Scenic Nature Landscapes: Similar to iconic landscapes but the key difference is that these are not necessarily from well-known locations. This genre actively focuses on pristine natural environments, often showcasing the untouched beauty found within national park systems across the country. This is the type of landscape photography that I'm personally most passionate about. These prints often tell the story of hidden gems and lesser-known vistas that only dedicated landscape photographers discover.
  • Intimate Landscapes: The opposite of grand scenic landscapes, intimate landscapes generally focuses on "scenes within a scenes" such as forest scenes, rocks, colors and water patterns. Trees are favorite subject of mine as I find them conducive to telling a visual story or metaphor. These pieces work exceptionally well in smaller spaces and offer collectors an opportunity to own fine art at various price points.
  • Abstract Landscape Photography: This is arguably the most difficult sub-genre to visualize as most nature landscapes are a "found subject" as opposed to "created subject". I find this type of artwork to be very rewarding creatively and satisfying to make. Abstract landscapes can be truly defined as fine art, often commanding higher prices due to their unique artistic interpretation and limited appeal to specialized collectors.
  • Aerial & Drone Photography: This type of photography is made from airplanes, helicopters and drones. Given the height at which many of these photos are made, some can also be classified as abstract landscapes. Aerial & drone photography opens up all new possibilities for the modern day landscape photographer and creates entirely new perspectives on familiar locations.
  • Urban Landscapes: While most of the other sub-genres I've described above pertain to nature scenes, urban landscapes can run the gamut from city skylines to architecture and street-level scenes.

As my artistic vision has evolved over the years, I find myself gravitating toward the less obvious compositions. Anyone can identify a good sunset and point straight at the horizon. It's more difficult to find unconventional compositions that most people would overlook. The subject matter here is not immediately obvious which is part of what drew me to this scene.

Understanding Fine Art Print Quality and Materials

The transition from digital capture to physical print is where landscape photography truly becomes fine art. The choice of print medium, paper quality, and printing technique directly impacts both the visual impact and long-term value of your investment.

Types of Fine Art Photography Prints

  • Giclee (Inkjet Printing): Giclee is a French art term to describe inkjet printing. While most consumers probably equate inkjet printing to the average home office printer, fine art inkjet prints are actually a high-quality type of printmaking technique that is accepted in galleries and museums. Modern pigment-based inks offer exceptional color accuracy and archival longevity, with some prints lasting over 100 years when properly cared for.
  • Lightjet: Continuous tone prints from a laser, these prints on Fuji Crystal Archive paper are ultra smooth due to the use of lasers contrary to inkjet printing which sprays millions of small dots onto the paper. These prints offer exceptional detail and smooth tonal transitions, making them ideal for landscape photography with subtle gradations.
  • Museum-Grade Cotton Rag: Arguably the most archival type of fine art paper, museum-grade cotton rag papers are generally thicker than most fine art photography papers. These papers provide exceptional texture and longevity, with some offering lifespans exceeding 200 years. Popular options include Hahnemühle Photo Rag and Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique.
  • Canvas Prints: Printed on museum-grade canvas, these prints are heavily-textured which can obscure fine details. This is fine for wide landscapes that do not feature fine details but not suitable for intimate landscape photography. Canvas works well for larger prints intended for spacious environments where viewing distance minimizes the texture's impact on detail.
  • Metal Dye-Sublimation: For fine art landscape photography that demands visual impact, ChromaLuxe metal prints offer exceptional color vibrancy and depth. Mountain scenes for example can benefit from this medium, as the luminous quality enhances the dramatic light found in high-altitude environments. The durability and modern aesthetic make metal prints particularly popular for contemporary spaces.
  • Acrylic Face Mount: Numerous fine art gallery installations feature this luxury printmaking technique that is ideal for colorful fine art landscape photos. The depth and dimensionality achieved through acrylic face mounting creates a viewing experience that transforms spaces, particularly when displaying large wall art pieces of coastal scenes or national park vistas. TruLife Acrylic Face Mounts are my print medium of choice for their exceptional clarity and museum-quality presentation.

Print Comparison Guide

Print Type Best For Longevity Texture Cost Level

Acrylic Face Mount Large colorful landscapes 75+ years Smooth, dimensional Highest

  • Art Fairs: Regional art shows often feature local photographers showcasing their work, including fine art nature photography from nearby wilderness areas and national parks. These events offer opportunities to meet artists directly and often feature show-specific pricing.
